Both has ok but not great out of focus rendition.Įdge resolution? Short answer: Don't know, don't care I usually do not give edges or corners much attention as my subjects rarely are there anyway. Both lenses are soft at f1.4, gets noticealble sharper at f2, more so at f2.8 and are really, really sharp at f4. I like them both, the 30 as a general purpose normal lens on crop cameras, the 50 as short tele lens on crop cameras or a normal on the D3. I also have used the Nikon 50/1.4 quite a lot. It is my standard lens on the D200, a lens I almost always bring wherever I go. I own the Sigma and has used it extensively for two years. įor those of you who have experience with the lens which version isĬorrect? Specifically how does edge resolution compare to that of Over all I think many people are overly obsessive about corners. It's a bit like measuring the weight and size of a lens and then make sweeping statements abouts its handling. I have it and it is true that edge performance is pretty mediocre. If that is the case then i might be a good choice. I don't doubt what you say about the edge performance, but I'm not quite worried about edge sharpness as my subjects are rarely ever that far off centre and landscapes are not an interest of mine. Alas it's been pushed very far down the wish list while I budget to attain other more "vital" lenses like the 70-200mm VR sooner. In all my observations, shallow DOF combined with careful focusing serve to add a greater sense of crispness and punch to a picture. ![]() For street or event photography I have long coveted this lens for its shallow DOF(subject isolation) at a somewhat wide angle, something which is very rare in a less than 35mm world, creamy bokeh (from samples I've seen) and color rendition. ![]()
